Montage of Memoirs: Bella Italia.

as a last minute experiment i placed my 2 design styles in a repeat and printed them on cheap lining paper (to get the right shade of off-white like newsprint). i printed them A2 to see how they would work as wrapping paper.

the project was to be an experimental one, and we were encouraged to try many processes. i chose a range of paper based techniques and placed them together in collages.

within this project i also looked at experimenting with cross stitch, as it gives a vintage feel but was contemporary by using references within my research of italy.
inspired by the ceiling in the Vatican museum of Rome, i foiled some frames to experiment with in my work, and here they are placed with the cross stitch.

in my first project of third year i chose to look at my imagery from Italy to work on the self initiated project.
The outcome was not how i initially imagined it, but overall i think the final pieces work well. I want to work within the greetings card industry after i graduate but with this project i was too in love with what i had seen in Italy to make it work as a cards brief. i decided that the final designs could be suited as art cards and used as general blank everyday cards but i know in future projects i need to have a set target audience before i begin.
i chose to work with a vintage colour palette, and in order to incorporate my own photographs into my work, i added sepia filters before printing onto newsprint to give a worn colour scheme. i worked in a collage way which i feel worked well, having a mix of photography, line drawing and stitch placed over grounds that i had worked onto with various disperse papers.i then cropped sections of the original collage to make suitable card designs.

Placement with Tigerprint.

last year Tigerprint set a live brief at college to design a mothers day or valentines day card, suitable for their range - the M&S customer. as a result of the project i won a 2 week placement with them and now they are using two of my designs in their range :)

some of the designs i did whist on placement at tigerprint. these were the unused designs that were returned to me. i loved every minute of my 2 weeks at tigerprint and learnt so much from it.

Pigeon Post (well duck actually!)

this project was paper based collages suited as art prints or wrapped together as an 'artist book'. i didn't like this project at the time, but looking back on it now i enjoy aspects of it and would like to incorporate more stitch into my next work.

Urban animals toile.

last year i did a project based on wildlife seen around citys. i placed my illustrations in repeat to create a toile but ended up making crafted pieces for an artist book. i was hoping to send my work to the artist book fair in leeds but i was burgled and didn't have my work backed up on my laptop and therefore the one book i did make was my only copy!

Greetings from Switzerland.

as a project in second year i looked at imagery from Switzerland and, taking inspiration from the traditional Swiss craft of Scherenschnitte, i laser cut some card designs.

there was question as to whether black was suited for card designs but i was pleased with the outcome and felt, as there was a strong link to where the idea came from, that they work quite nicely. i also liked that some were simply aesthetically pleasing without being too obviously swiss, as that would narrow my target market. they certainly would work well as an alternative to postcards.as my parents now live in switzerland i know there is a huge amount of expats living over there and cards such as these could fill a niche in the market as my mum struggles to find nice cards to send to relatives here.

Reviewing my work to date...

I have used this blog in the past as a way to record any thoughts and share my photographic experiences. Now the time has come, to start showing my working styles to people and i figured putting images on here will be the easiest way to share my ideas...
